DHS Secretary Designates Haiti for TPS
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas designated Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, effective August 3, 2021, through February 3, 2023.
Haitian nationals and individuals having no nationality who last habitually resided in Haiti may submit an initial registration application under the TPS designation for Haiti during the 18-month registration period that begins August 3, 2021 and ends on February 3, 2023. TPS applicants may also apply for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
When applying for a federal, state, or local government benefit, individuals will need to provide documentation to show they are TPS Haiti beneficiaries. To show they have TPS, these individuals may provide their TPS EAD with a category code of A12 or C19, or a copy of their Form I-797, Notice of Approval, for a current Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status. SAVE will be able to verify an individual's TPS by using information from a benefit applicant's TPS EAD.
If an applicant is a TPS beneficiary under the current designation for Haiti, currently their TPS documentation will expire on Oct. 4, 2021. To be eligible for benefits under this new TPS designation for Haiti beginning August 3, 2021 and ending February 3, 2021, the applicant must register for TPS as instructed in the Federal Register notice (FRN).
